On January 26, 2006, EMC announced several new products and capabilities across its high-end storage line (DMX-3), NAS storage line (Celerra), and content-addressed storage line (Centera). The company also officially introduced its file virtualization product based on its recent acquisition of Rainfinity. The DMX-3 announcements have the most immediate effect on enterprises in the process of evaluating storage. There is now an entry-level DMX-3 configuration that starts with 96 drives and can scale to 2,400 drives (or 1 petabyte of storage). On the other hand, file virtualization will only appeal to enterprises with a specific set of challenges. Nevertheless, the announcement is noteworthy to competitors and partners, as file virtualization is an important element of EMC's overall virtualization strategy and yet another product that will bolster its offerings in IP storage.
